The Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah, said the newly introduced e-levy policy will enable government to earn revenues from the hunter, specifically the grasscutter and snail vendors.

Speaking to JoyNews, he said the e-levy policy will be an avenue to generate funds for national development from hunters who do not pay tax.

According to him, on the Anyinam-Kumasi stretch, some women sell snails and can generate 3,000 Ghana cedis monthly which officers in Accra do not even get.

He said earning little funds from these traders through the introduction of the e-levy is a commendable initiative.

According to him, the snail seller, every month, sells up to ten boxes for 3000cedis but does not pay tax and so by the introduction of the e-levy, government will earn money from her when she transfers money electronically to her relatives.

He said the hunter also earns money from the selling of grasscutter and so when he transfers money to purchase bullets for hunting using the MoMo service, it will be an avenue for government to tax him.

"The guy who is selling grasscutter there will send something small for the hunter to buy bullets. That's why we take 1.75% of the money. So it will give us the opportunity to let all these people pay from a little bit of that money and finally it is not a compulsory tax. If you don't do MoMo you don't pay. So if you don't want to pay, don't do MoMo. It's simple," he said.

The Member of Parliament also believes that the e-levy is not inimical to digitalization as it is made to appear.
