The current deal for Mohamed Salah expires in the summer of 2023. Vinny O'Connor of Sky Sports News explains why Salah's ambitions and Liverpool's wage structure are key factors in contract negotiations - and why a deal would be sporting director Michael Edwards' biggest success.

With only 18 months left on his current contract, Mohamed Salah is in contract talks with Liverpool.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has remained relatively calm in the face of the situation, saying this week, "What we all want is clear... and things like this take time."

But, from the standpoint of both the club and the player, what are the key factors at work? And what steps must be taken in order for the extension to take effect?

Salah remains aspirant.

To begin with, this isn't just about money. Salah's ambition remains undimmed, as does his desire to win. This is a Liverpool squad that will need to be refreshed at some point. Roberto Firmino has turned 30, Sadio Mane has turned 29, Jordan Henderson has turned 31, Thiago Alcantara has turned 30, Virgil van Dijk has turned 30, and Fabinho has turned 28.

Salah will want to see the club's continued commitment to adding quality to what they have in order to maintain Liverpool's ability to compete for titles.

Choosing the appropriate figure

Before he leaves in the summer, securing Salah's long-term future at the club could be his biggest success of his time at Anfield.

From the club's perspective, they must find the magic number that confirms Salah's place among the elite of world football, while remaining mindful of their wage structure and avoiding upsetting it.

They are also operating in a transfer market where Real Madrid and Barcelona's financial clout has been significantly reduced, which reduces the chances of pushing up a potential transfer fee as high as possible if an agreement cannot be reached.

At the same time, with Salah's contract expiring, clubs may be able to outperform Liverpool's wage offer in the future if he becomes available on a free transfer.

Michael Edwards has done so much right as the club's sporting director, particularly when it comes to difficult negotiations.
