Coffin sellers in Asafo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, have attributed the collapse of the coffin-making industry to the taste of politicians in foreign coffins.

According to them, when a prominent politician dies in Ghana, politicians import a foreign-made coffin instead of patronizing a made-in Ghana coffin.

This, they said, affected the growth of the local coffin industry.

In an interview monitored by Modern Ghana on December 8, a leading member of the coffin makers association, Mr. Effah Poku, said the local coffin industry will grow and the unemployment rate will be reduced if politicians develop taste for locally manufactured coffins if they lose their loved ones.

According to him, the political leadership urge the youths to venture into entrepreneurship yet they don't patronize the services of local entrepreneurs specifically coffin makers.

"It baffles me how our top political leaders preach innovation and entrepreneurship among the youths and still import common coffins from other countries.

We, numbering over 500, produce and export quality coffins in the country with high end woods yet the leaders consistently shun our products and go outside the country anytime the nation needs a coffin to bury a prominent person," he said.

The coffin sellers entreat government to support the industry and create a conducive environment for the industry to grow.
