Total darkness has hit the Yilo Krobo and the Upper Manya Krobo Municipalities since December 5, 2021, affecting businesses and making lives uncomfortable.
According to the Electricity Company of Ghana (Tema Region), the incident is caused by overload and faults detected in numerous transformers.
“The activities of unscrupulous persons who transferred customers from a transformer with a phase-off problem to adjacent transformers,” according to the company, led to the current situation.
These detections, the company said, have destroyed numerous transformers in the affected areas.
The company said the feeders at the Bulk Supply Point (BSP) have therefore been shut down by the company to protect lives and properties in the affected areas.
Background
This follows after a group of residents who call themselves United Krobo Foundation gave the ECG 21 days ultimatum to vacate the land or face their wrath.
While expressing their rage in a demonstration, the group cautioned the ECG against the installation of prepaid meters in the municipalities.
According to them, prepaid meters are full of challenges and have given them headaches.
The residents in a demonstration on November 22, chanted songs and displayed placards which read, "VRA Krobo’s are fed up”, “No prepaid in Krobo land”, “No bill No prepaid”, “freedom from ECG”, “VRA we need light from you”, ECG must go we want VRA” among others.
However, ECG relocated its office to Juapong in the Volta Region to prevent any impending harm against its staff.
The General Manager of the company (Tema Region), Engineer Emmanuel Akinie said, the step taken by the company will enable it to avoid undesirable occurrences in the future as a result of threats made by the angry youths.
For this reason, he said, “ECG is unable to continue full operations in the affected areas.”
