The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, says the 13,000 Junior High Schools in the country will be reduced to 2,500 as part of measures to welcome a new system of education that will encourage the study of Science and Mathematics.
According to him, this initiative will enhance the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in the country.
The proposed educational system will be referred to as lower secondary school.
He said each school will have well-equipped science laboratories.
He added that the new system will see students from about 12 different Junior High Schools brought together in one new school with one headmaster.
Students in the lower secondary schools will spend 12 years and not three years like it used to be.
“In 2023 when we open those schools you are going to see how we are going to provide six years quality secondary education and not three years plus some three years old middle school-led education that we call high school,” he said.
