When Liverpool hosts Newcastle United at Anfield on Thursday, they will be hoping to close the gap on Manchester City to just one point.

On Thursday, Gameweek 17 of the 2021/22 Premier League season will come to a close, with three matches on the schedule. In the final match of the season, Liverpool will host Newcastle United at Anfield on Thursday.

Liverpool has won each of their last seven games since losing to West Ham United in November. The Reds, on the other hand, have not been in top form in recent weeks, having been forced to work hard to earn all three points in the Premier League by Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and in the UEFA Champions League by AC Milan. However, they have managed to complete the task.

Newcastle United's inconsistencies, on the other hand, are continuing, despite the fact that they have finally earned their first Premier League victory this month. The Magpies, on the other hand, have a joint-low 10 points from 16 games so far, keeping them in the relegation zone. Watford, in 17th place, is only three points ahead, giving the Tyneside club a ray of hope.

Last season, Liverpool and Newcastle United drew 1-1 in the corresponding fixture, with Joe Willock snatching a point with the game's final kick after Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool the lead in the third minute. The Hard Tackle examines the matchup ahead of the most recent meeting between the two teams.

Team News & Tactics

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp's preparations for the visit of Newcastle United are not being hampered by any new injury concerns. Five first-team players will be unavailable for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Thursday.

Adrian (calf), Nathaniel Phillips (head), Harvey Elliott (ankle), and Curtis Jones (eye) will all be absent. Divock Origi, meanwhile, is a major doubt due to a minor knee injury that has plagued him in recent days.

There is, however, some good news: Roberto Firmino is fit and ready to play after participating in full training this week. The game, however, will have come too soon for the Brazilian to be included in the starting lineup. As a result, Diogo Jota will lead Liverpool's attack, flanked by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Klopp could make a few changes to the rest of the team, with Naby Keita set to start in the midfield unit instead of Thiago Alcantara. In the middle of the park, the Guinean midfielder will join Fabinho and captain Jordan Henderson.

At the heart of the Liverpool defense, Ibrahima Konate should team up with Virgil van Dijk. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, the two marauding full-backs, will flank the centre-back duo. Finally, there is no doubt that Alisson Becker is the best goalkeeper in the world.

Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Jota, Mane
