The Member of Parliament for Damongo who doubles as Minister for Land and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, said an incumbent government is able to canvass massive votes in an election based on how well it performed and not necessarily based on when a flag bearer is elected.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on December 19 on the New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s National Delegates' Conference, the Damongo MP said it is how a ruling party performs that determines its success or defeat in an election.
The Natural Resources Minister said it was premature for the NPP to begin thinking about how to win the next election which comes in the next three years.
“I want to submit and I want to do so forcefully that you win or lose elections when you are in government based on how you govern [and] not so much when you elect your candidate. Based on how you govern, based on how your country people perceive your governance – whether they are satisfied with your governance or they are not satisfied with your governance,” he said.
Jinapor urges the ruling NPP to focus on providing good leadership for the citizenry and desist from painting a picture that the party only cares about winning power.
Meanwhile, the Minister said it was insignificant for the party to elect its candidate two years before general elections as proposed by some party members.
