The Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana is one of the traditional halls of residence on campus for undergraduate students and it is the only all-male hall in the university.
The hall received its first batch of undergraduate students in the 1956/1957 academic year. That was exactly the period Ghana regained her independence from her colonial masters, the British.
The hall initially did not have a common name during its inception and was mostly called, "The Third Hall" until it was formally named, "Commonwealth Hall" to celebrate Ghana's membership in the Commonwealth of Nations.
The Commonwealth Hall was formally inaugurated in March 1957 by the first President of the Republic of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The hall has since its inauguration been an all-male hall. That is, the hall only accommodates male students unlike the other halls in the university such as the Mensah Sarbah Hall, Dr. Hilla Limaan Hall, and others that accommodate students from all genders.
The affiliates of Commonwealth Hall call themselves, "Vandals" and its motto is, "Truth Stands."
The hall had accommodated prominent Ghanaians such as the Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, the former President of MUSIGA, Obour, and others.
The hall has magnificent structures built with beautiful brown bricks.
Due to the magnificent nature of the hall, most newly admitted students into the University of Ghana wish to be assigned to it and join the Vandals family.
The hall has a serene environment for learning. It has about two summer huts. It has facilities such restaurant, mosque, church, library, etc.
