The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Akuffo Dampare has condemned the habit of detaining at least 25 suspected criminals or criminals in a single room.

Touring some police stations, the IGP cautioned police personnel to desist from confining up to 25 people to a room.

According to him, the practice is outmoded and must be stopped.

He said the police cells are not spacious enough to keep a large number of people and doing that amounts to inhumanity.

“You can’t put 25 people in that space. What we are saying is that irrespective of whoever is involved, whether he is a suspect, criminal, or whatever, the humanity of that person is like ours and we cannot take the dignity of that person away...," he said.

The IGP entreated the police personnel to strive collectively in condemning over-population in cells as anyone irrespective of one's status can find himself or herself in the shoes of the cell's inhabitants.

He also told the officers that it was not like he was subjecting them to blame but rather, a problem has been detected and necessitates condemnation.
