The Ghana Police Service has cautioned religious groups against making doom prophecies that tend to instigate fear and panic.

According to the police, false prophecies on the night of December 31 can lead to five years imprisonment.

In a press statement issued on Monday, December 27, the Ghana Police Service said doom prophecies in the name of religion have aroused fear and panic over some years now.

While acknowledging the right to freedom of expression, the police said it must not lead to the violation of one's fundamental human right.

The police said it is unconstitutionally unpardonable to raise false alarms or to disseminate information with the motive of instilling fear in the masses.

Whoever prophesies death or predicts danger without evidence, the police said, will be dealt with according to the law.

The police said whoever deliberately violates this protocol will spend at least five years in jail.

The Police added that although they acknowledge the reality of the Supreme Being, the mission is not to fight religion or stop worship service but rather to annihilate the danger associated with doom prophecies
