Dominic Calvert-Lewin has resurfaced as an Arsenal target ahead of the January transfer window, and former England and Liverpool forward John Barnes has backed the move.
Former England international John Barnes has urged Arsenal to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton in a deal that would be "brilliant" for both parties.
Calvert-Lewin, 24, was linked to the Gunners over the summer following his impressive 16-goal Premier League season last season.
The Three Lions star, a member of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad, started the current season in blistering form, scoring three goals in three games before being sidelined for several months due to a broken toe.
Calvert-Lewin is nearing a return to fitness and, with the January transfer window approaching, is back on the radars of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu.
Barnes, who scored 106 goals for Liverpool, has been impressed by Calvert-consistency Lewin's and believes Everton should be willing to sell for the right price.
"Arsenal have been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who would be a good signing for them," Barnes said, according to Bonus Code Bets.
"He's young, English, and demonstrates good commitment and effort, but he's currently an Everton player, and he won't want to leave right now."
Everton fans adore him, he's doing well there, and he needs to demonstrate that level of consistency for club and country before considering a move to one of the bigger clubs."
Realistically, he hasn't done enough for Everton to even consider moving him.
"However, if he were to join Arsenal, it would be a fantastic signing for both parties, particularly Arsenal."
The Gunners' interest in Calvert-Lewin comes at a time when Arteta's current strikers are in a state of flux.
After another disciplinary breach, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger stripped veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 32, of the captaincy in mid-December.
Aubameyang's days at Arsenal appear to be numbered, and he has been heavily linked with a January move to Barcelona.
Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have shone in the No.9 role in Gabonese absence.
Frenchman Lacazette, 30, had three goals or assists in three games prior to the Boxing Day clash with Norwich, while Englishman Nketiah, 22, scored a hat-trick against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
The two strikers' contracts expire at the end of the season, and neither appears willing to sign an extension with Arsenal.
This means Arteta and Edu will need to sign at least one striker, and possibly several forwards, either in January or next summer.
Arsenal has also been linked with Lille's Jonathan David, Fiorentina's Dusan Vlahovic, and Sevilla's Youssef En-Nesyri.
