Attending crossover service annually has become a norm to the Vice-President, Dr. Mahmud Bawumia, and his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia.
A video of the Vice-President dancing with his wife as a form of God's glorification and thanksgiving to the Creator for prolonging their lives to witness another year is fast trending on social media.
The Vice-President took to social media on January 1, 2022, to announce his visit to the Breman Ebenezer Methodist Church, St. Peter's Cathedral, and Ayigya Pentecost Church in Kumasi to mark the end of the year.
"Hajia Samira Bawumia and I together with some dignitaries joined Breman Ebenezer Methodist Church, St. Peter's Cathedral, and Ayigya Pentecost Church in Kumasi for 31st December watch night service.
May 2022 come with good tidings.
Happy new year to all," he said in a Facebook post.
However, this has stirred massive reactions on social media.
While some netizens saw it as a way of promoting religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence, others saw it as an attempt to score political points.
Some Muslims condemned the act and said it is Islamically unacceptable for a Muslim to join Christian worship while citing religious tolerance as an excuse.
A Muslim Facebook user, Umar, wrote:
Peaceful co-existence is superb but it is not guaranteed merely by occasionally or habitually joining the worship service of a faith you don't believe in. Religious tolerance is when Christians acknowledge the fact that Muslims attending church service is against Islamic doctrines, and Muslims also tolerate Christians when they fail to join Islamic worship. We are all regulated by different codes of ethics or scriptures. Religious tolerance is not jeopardizing your religious philosophies or principles to impress humanity or for political points. Religious tolerance is achieved when you don't forcibly impose your religious ideologies on others like the Qur'an says, "let there be no compulsion in religion." Salaam!
But the Vice-President while addressing the congregants, said his presence was to promote religious tolerance.
