The Speaker of Parliament, Kingsford Alban Sumana Bagbin, said building a consensus will not be possible so long as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus continues to verbally abuse him.

Making references to some comments from the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, and other member of Parliaments on the ticket of the NPP, the Speaker said their actions disrupt impasse resolutions in the chamber.

In an interview with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), the Speaker said the Deputy Majority Leader has been dragging his reputation to the mud through accusations but anticipates that a consensus will be built.

That, he said, will make it difficult for the house to resolve the impasse surrounding the 2022 government budget statement and economic policy.

“You come and personally attack me, then you come to the House and you expect that we should have that spirit of consensus building; things don’t work that way,” he said.

In December last year, Afernyo-Markin alleged that the Speaker of Parliament was displaying partisanship on the budget's approval. He said the Speaker was conniving with the NDC to deliberately reject the budget.

However, the Speaker said if one should be blamed, then it's the First Deputy Speaker, Joe Wise who vacated the Speaker's seat to vote on the controversial e-levy policy.

He cited Joe Wises' action as the cause of the brawl.
