Johnson Asiedu Nketia, longest serving General Secretary of a political party in Ghana has explained how the ruling New Patriotic Party tricked the NDC's side of Parliament on January 7, 2021.
The first sitting of 8th Parliament of the fourth republic was chaotic owing to the disagreements in the election of a new Speaker as mandated by the constitution.
General mosquito as he is affectionately called explained what transpired in the law making chamber during the election and swearing in of Alban Bagbin.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia indicated that the leadership of the New Patriotic Party tricked them by coming to beg the NDC's side of the house to select the first deputy Speaker from the NPP.
"A word came from the Presidency also begging on the same issue so we agreed to grant them their request".
Asiedu Nketia revealed that the National Democratic Congress didn't want the country to be held ransom by the election of Speakers because dignitaries were in town to witness the inauguration of President Akufo-Addo and so agreed to their request.
After an agreement was reached, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, MP Suame, majority leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs publicly said that we rather begged them and that there was no election in Parliament to select the 1st deputy Speaker.
Mr. Asiedu emphasized that the NPP used trickery to select the two deputy Speakers.
