IMPROVE ON CONDITION OF TEACHERS – ASANTEHENE TO GOV’T

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has encouraged the government to improve the country's teacher situation.

He believes that teachers' status should accurately reflect the value they place on their jobs in society.

When speaking to members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) at their 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference, the Asantehene said these things.

"While we will always advocate for moderation in the face of national economic realities, we will nonetheless press policymakers to guarantee that our teachers' standing really reflects the value we place on their role in society," he said.

He also warned teachers against using strike as a bargaining strategy.

Instead of striking, he assigned them the duty of improving their negotiating skills.

The Asantehene noted that it is schoolchildren, not politicians, who bear the brunt of such actions.

"Obviously, those who actually suffer are the innocent children," the Asantehene stated. I implore you to concentrate your thoughts on the need for a better system of talks and discussions that would reduce, if not eliminate, the use of industrial action and its disastrous implications for our children."
