After
a shaky start to life at Stamford Bridge, Saul is finally adapting to life and
football play at Chelsea. The Spanish International completed a season-long
loan with an option-to-buy clause to Chelsea during the summer of 2021.
Upon
his arrival at Chelsea, expectations were high as there were hopes not only on
the path of management but fans that his unique qualities as one of the finest
midfielders in European football would augment Chelsea’s midfield which was
battling to maintain and keep fit its regular starters.
Unfortunately,
he failed woefully in his initially attempt to replace the then injured Ngolo
Kante and Matteo Kovavic. His rating of 5.8/10 on Sofascore after Chelsea’s 3:0
win over Aston Villa in September 2021 and his shocking display against Watford
in December, 2021 caused a massive backlash from a section of Chelsea faithful.
Thomas Tuchel maintained his trust and Saul as he posited that the player
needed more time and patience to adapt to English football and culture.
Perhaps,
this trust by the gaffer has culminated in a more refined version of Saul
Niguez the world is witnessing now. The amazing performance of Saul in his last
three games in a Chelsea Shirt has sparkled a heated debate especially among
Chelsea fans as to whether his move should be made a permanent one after his
current loan move expires in June.
He was voted as the Man of the Match on Chelsea’s official Twitter page after their win over Spurs in the first league of Carabao’s semi-finals. With an improvement in his form and confidence, there is surely a good omen for Chelsea as the team has been rocked with injuries and COVID. It remains key to see how this resurgence of Saul pan’s out especially as the season comes to an end in June.
What
is your take on Saul? Does he deserves a permanent move to Chelsea? Or should
he return to his parent club after his loan move expires?
