Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Chelsea, provides an update on Antonio Rudiger.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has stated that he is unconcerned about the contract situation surrounding defender Antonio Rudiger, despite rumours of a move away from London for the German international. The contract of the former Roma man at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the season, and he has been linked with a number of European top-flight clubs including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United. When asked if he had taken Rudiger out for coffee and dinner to appease him, Tuchel replied that instead of coffees, the defender needs to feel 'the connection and the trust,' which can only be achieved through'minutes and actions.' The last thing Rudiger needs, according to his German boss, are "words and pampering."
Rudiger has not made a final decision on his future, and Chelsea could lose the 28-year-old on a free transfer in the coming months. Tuchel, on the other hand, believes that the club's ongoing talks with the defender are 'in good hands.'
"'It's in good hands; I have faith in the club and my player." It's not an issue for me. Toni can still deliver for us, so he's still super reliable, nothing has changed.”
Tuchel also discussed the uncertain futures of Ross Barkley and Emerson Palmieri. This season, Barkley has struggled for minutes under the German, and he has been linked with moves to two of his former clubs, Leeds United and Everton. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, on the other hand, is adamant that Barkley can become a key player for the Blues.
"'There's always a chance to make the squad, the team, and the field." The situation has remained unchanged. We will make a decision later [on him starting against Chesterfield in the FA Cup].”
Meanwhile, Emerson was loaned to Lyon in August. With Ben Chilwell ruled out for the remainder of the season, Emerson is expected to be recalled the Blues as cover at left-back. Tuchel remained tight-lipped about the possibility of recalling the Italian.
"Even though he didn't play much last season, we know and appreciate him as a person and a player." But it isn't just what I wish for."
Although the uncertain futures of Barkley and Emerson will not concern Blues fans, the possibility of losing Rudiger is concerning. At the heart of our defense, the German international has been an outstanding performer for us. We risk losing an experienced centre-back and one of the Premier League's best players if his contract situation is not resolved by the end of the season.
Despite receiving criticism from both fans and pundits at the start of his Chelsea career, Rudiger has developed into one of our most dependable defenders. If the club is unable to keep the German beyond the summer, it will be a significant loss.
Barkley has had little impact for us since joining from Everton, so seeing the Englishman linked away from Stamford Bridge would not raise many eyebrows among Blues fans. As we saw at Everton, the midfielder is certainly talented, and if he does return to his former club, we can hope that Barkley can recapture some of his old magic.
If the rumors about Emerson being recalled as a replacement for the injured Chilwell are true, it would be a wise move. Despite the fact that the Italian international never really established himself in the first team, he was a capable deputy for us at times. Given that we currently require cover until the end of the season, having someone with Premier League experience as well as connections to Chelsea players makes Emerson an ideal candidate for the left-back position.
