Jamie Redknapp believes VAR was correct to deny Tottenham a penalty against Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has weighed in on whether or not Tottenham Hotspur should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 loss to Chelsea.
The north Londoners were defeated 2-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge and trailed 1-0 on Wednesday night after Antonio Rudiger headed the ball past Pierluigi Gollini in the 18th minute.
Antonio Conte's side were then given a lifeline shortly before halftime, when Rudiger was adjudged to have fouled Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the penalty area, and Andre Marriner pointed to the spot.
However, VAR overturned Marriner's decision after replays revealed the foul occurred outside the box, and a free kick was awarded instead.
Redknapp then spoke out about the incident, admitting that the correct decision was made in the end.
"My first thought is why is Rudiger, when he is certainly going to outpace Hojbjerg, why is he even going in for the challenge there," he said to Sky Sports at halftime.
"Once he's in the box, he's lucky that VAR intervened, because otherwise the referee would have given the penalty." It's a terrible decision. But they made it in the end, and they're lucky it's outside the box."
In the second half, Marriner awarded Tottenham another penalty after Kepa Arrizabalaga collided with Lucas Moura, but was told to consult the pitchside monitor before overturning his decision again.
The Lillywhites' misery was compounded when VAR determined that Harry Kane was offside shortly after the hour mark, after the England captain had put the ball in the back of the net.
