THE CHAMPION'S CURSE

A final without champions once more. In the three editions of the Spanish Super Cup that have been played using the new structure, neither the League champion nor the Cup champion has made it to the title game. The curse is still in effect. The current League (Real Madrid) and Cup (Athletic) runners-up will duel for the trophy on Sunday, in an unprecedented final that will re-enact the first semifinal of last season, in which the lions defeated the madridistas in Malaga.

Real Madrid won the inaugural Super Cup with the new format, which included four teams, in 2020. Because Barça had left a spot after winning the regularity competition and finishing second in the Cup last season, the Whites competed as third-placed in the League. In the semifinals, Madrid defeated Valencia, the KO tournament champion, and in the final, they defeated Atlético Madrid, the League runner-up, in a penalty shoot-out.

Last year, something similar happened, however Athletic and Real Sociedad went to the event (hosted in Andalusia) without having chosen who would win the previous season's Cup. The lions, who finished second in the postponed final, knocked out league champions Madrid. Barcelona, the runner-up in the League, appealed to Real, who would win the cup three months later, pending the title. Athletic won the Super Cup in the final, which was held at La Cartuja.

The victors of the Spanish Super Cup are in good shape.

Champions on two fronts (by assignment)

Double Champions 1 2 (per tournament)

Three league champions, 19 cup champions, and eight cup runners-up

4th place in League 1

1 Athletic and Real Madrid were automatically awarded the championship in 1983-84 and 1988-89, respectively, after winning the League and Cup the previous season. If a team achieved the double in later editions, the Cup runner-up competed in the event.

The competition was not held in the seasons 1985-86 and 1986-87.

This year, history repeats itself in Saudi Arabia, this time in Riyadh. The Cup champion (Barcelona) and League champion (Atlético Madrid) have both been eliminated in the semifinals by the runners-up. For the third time in 47 days, Real Madrid and Athletic will face each other. Another Spanish football classic (it will be the 239th match between the two teams) between two teams who will compete in an unprecedented final since the tournament's inception in the 1982-83 season. At the same time, it will be the first duel to be rematched in the new competition structure. Rematch or revalidation of the title on Sunday.

Since 2006-2007, the Cup has not been won by a single player.

The curse is significantly worse for Cup champions. Sevilla, which overcame Real Madrid in the 2006-2007 season, was the last team to win the Super Cup as the winner of the KO tournament without also being the League champion. Barcelona has won three Super Cups since then, and is the current League and Cup champions, however the other 10 teams that won the Cup but not the League were unable to lift the Super Cup.
