A final without champions once more. In the three editions of the Spanish Super Cup that have been played using the new structure, neither the League champion nor the Cup champion has made it to the title game. The curse is still in effect. The current League (Real Madrid) and Cup (Athletic) runners-up will duel for the trophy on Sunday, in an unprecedented final that will re-enact the first semifinal of last season, in which the lions defeated the madridistas in Malaga.
Real Madrid won the inaugural Super Cup with the new format, which included four teams, in 2020. Because Barça had left a spot after winning the regularity competition and finishing second in the Cup last season, the Whites competed as third-placed in the League.
