The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the striking University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to return to the classroom with immediate effect.
A statement released on Friday, January 14, 2022, states that the industrial strike embarked by the members of UTAG is unlawful and is not in line with laid down procedures.
UTAG embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday, January 10 to demand the improvement of their service conditions.
The association said the strike was fuelled by Government's failure to meet its demands within a particular period unanimously agreed upon.
According to UTAG, government has violated the timeliness agreed upon by both parties to address the strike issues hence necessitating the ongoing strike.
However, the NLC's Executive Secretary, Ofosu Asamoah, said the commission observed in a meeting between government and UTAG on Thursday that the reason for the industrial strike has already been addressed.
The commission, therefore, directed UTAG to “immediately call off the ongoing strike and resume work.”
