Since being named Manchester United captain, Maguire has faced criticism for his performance, with some arguing that Ronaldo should be given the armband instead.
Interim Ralf Rangnick, the manager of Manchester United, has responded to claims that Cristiano Ronaldo should be made the club's captain following criticism of Harry Maguire.
Maguire's form has dipped since his return to Old Trafford from Euro 2020, with the defender facing criticism for his team's lack of leadership on the pitch.
The England international was chosen United captain less than six months after his record-breaking move from Leicester City, but many felt it was a hasty choice.
The 28-year-old has struggled to live up to the expectations that come with being United's captain on the field, and has been mocked for his many apologies for the team's bad performances.
Ralf Rangnick has stated his opinion on the captaincy of Manchester United.
Rangnick, according to former United legend Rio Ferdinand, should relieve Maguire of his captaincy in order for the defender to regain his form.
"I believe he was granted it too soon," Ferdinand said on his podcast Vibe with FIVE.
"It's difficult enough putting your feet under the table and starting to feel comfortable at Manchester United without the added responsibility of being captain."
"Being captain comes with a lot of duty, a lot of history, and a lot of weight on your shoulders." To shoulder that weight, you must have firsthand experience of being there for an extended period of time.
"Coming in and focusing on becoming a Manchester United mainstay was more important to Maguire than being captain."
Ronaldo, who has extensive captaincy experience, is the most likely choice to succeed Maguire.
During his nine-year stint at Real Madrid, the superstar led Portugal to Euro 2016 victory and donned the armband on a frequent basis.
Ronaldo has been appointed captain once since his return to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, for the defeat to Wolves.
For United's defeat to Wolves, Cristiano Ronaldo was chosen captain, with some demanding for him to wear the armband full-time.
Rangnick, on the other hand, has stated that Ronaldo will only be given the armband if Maguire is unavailable, and has urged the veteran to lead in a different manner.
"Right now, I don't see a reason to do that," Rangnick said, "since Harry has been the captain thus far and will continue to be the captain as long as Harry is playing."
"If he doesn't play, someone else will have to captain the team." Depending on who is playing, this can differ from game to game.
"We don't only have Cristiano. We have Edinson. We have a few older players, such David de Gea in goal, Victor Lindelof, and Bruno [Fernandes].
"We have enough experienced senior players who can not only be role models in training, on the field, and in games, but also be role models in their own right."
"But this has to happen in all those locker room chats, or when they're all together in the hotel for away games or home games."
Following his absence from Monday's FA Cup third-round victory over Aston Villa, Ronaldo is expected to return for Saturday's Premier League match against the same opponent.
