The Ghana Armed Forces (GFA) has taken away from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, the military men assigned to offer him protection.

A letter issued on January 11, 20222 and presented to the office of the Speaker of Parliament, said the services of the military personnel to the Speaker were withdrawn because due process was not followed in assigning them.

The letter says the four military men who have been with Babin since January 2021 when he was elected into office, were assigned to the Speaker "without the proper procedure."

The four military men are:

Sergeant Bonnet Prince

Sergeant Agbley Prosper

Apugiba Awinney David

WOI Jafaru Bunwura

The letter also stated that the military is making efforts to regularize their attachment though it has not stated when exactly the redeployment will be done.

Reacting to the development, the Speaker said the move is not commendable in a democratic society like Ghana and that any attempt to truncate the number of military personnel assigned to offer security to the Speaker will set a bad example in the country.

"The attempt to strip the Speaker off security protection is untenable. In a country that takes pride in its democratic institutions and processes, the decision to reduce the number of security personnel assigned to the Speaker detracts from the political gains that Ghana has made, and is a bad precedent," he said.
