MEET MAAME ESI SWATSON THE FIRST BLACK FEMALE PILOT FROM GHANA

Every individual has a dream of making it big in future or getting a descent job when he or she grows..others dream of wonderful professions such as being a nurse, doctor, bank manager and so on. Due to this goal one begins to work hard in other to achieve this aim and this article talks about the first ever black female pilot from Ghana.


Maame Esi was born on February 23rd, 1997 at Saltpond in the Mfantisman Municipal District in the Central Region of Ghana and is the first out of four children. She was schooled at the University of Ghana Basic School and continued her secondary education at Ghana Christian International High School at Does where she studied General Science. She got admitted at the March 1st Aviation Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa and had her first solo flight on April 4, 2016 at the age of nineteen (19) years.



Maame Esi revealed that growing up there was this popular and frequent question asked in most homes “what do you want to be in future”. She went on to explain further “ I was only nine years old so when this question is asked I would either say a pilot, doctor or a nurse, I only thought being a pilot was just about flying the plain  with the passengers sitting behind you quietly, but during my flight training I realized I would have to talk a lot so I wanted to switch for another profession, I can recall when teachers used to ask what we would want to be in future and most people stands for doctors,lawyers and nurses and I only stand for being a pilot, and the teachers are like wow. I think is the wow that kept me going till now”.


Maame Esi now holds a commercial pilot license to the standards of the South African civil aviation authority which she obtained during the 2018 Christmas Eve which in an interview explained that, that made her Christmas a memorable one. Maame is the First Lady to work with the Ghanaian airline known as passion air where she operates the De Havilland Canada Dash 8 aircraft.


Esi Swatson has set up her own aviation company called Excel Aviation Company with the hopes of helping other young girls who are also aiming to become great pilots like herself.


Esi was celebrated by the Ministry of Aviation Ghana and also attended a sponsored conference trip to the United States of America as the first African female pilot by the international women Aviation in 2016. Maame has won several other attentions in and around Ghana as the youngest black female pilot.
