Two nursing students at the Asankrangwa Nursing and Midwifery Training School in the Amenfi West municipality of the Western Region were killed after their tricycle, locally known as Pragya, collided with a grader as it descended a hill.
When the accident occurred, the two were returning from the market with food for their survival.
Their demise shocked and saddened the entire community.
The grader's driver made an illegal overtake of a saloon car at the top of the slope and dropped at the same speed, colliding with two tricycles, including the one in which the girls were riding.
Priscilla Antwi Williams, a Level 300 student, and Ellen Ayitey Ansah, a second-year student at the training school, have been confirmed as the victims.
Ms Jessie Asiedua Aduako, Principal of the Asankrangwa Nursing and Midwifery Training School, claimed the grader went off its lane after passing a couple of cars and crashed with the two tricycles, according to reports reaching the school.
Mr Kwame Kissi Sam, Priscilla Williams' father, claimed his daughter and Ellen, who also happens to be her (Priscilla) school daughter, came to visit and he saw them off.
"After engaging her, I met the other girl with whom she usually comes home, and she told me that she had just arrived last night and that Priscilla had requested her to come and wait for her at home while she was at the salon cleaning up her hair," he explained.
Mr Sam claimed that the girls prepared dinner before going for school and informed him that they would stop by the shop for a few necessities before heading to campus.
Mr Lord Nana Tandoh, the Municipal Chief Executive of Wassa Amenfi West, who visited the scene, expressed grief at the event, calling it "unfortunate," and said that efforts were being made to contact Ms Ansah's parents.
