The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has traveled again to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for medical review.

In a letter presented to the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, the Speaker said his trip to Dubai for a medical checkup was due on January 7, 2022.

“I am writing to inform you of my absence from Ghana from Friday, 7 January 2022 till Sunday 23, 2022 to honour an appointment for a medical review in the United Arab Emirates.”

The Speaker said the Eighth Parliament will commence its sittings for the year on January 25, 2022.

On November 27, 2022, the Speaker traveled to the UAE for medical review.

His travel in November followed a chaotic development in Parliament that saw the Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) staging a walkout just when the house was about to vote on the approval of the controversial e-levy.

The budget was rejected after the NPP staged a walkout.

However, while the Speaker was away, the NPP MPs in a sitting presided over by the First Deputy Speaker, Joe Wise, also overturned the Speaker's ruling and approved the budget in the absence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus.

But the controversial e-levy was rejected by the NDC MPs of Parliament's Finance Committee.

The 1.75% tax on electronic transactions is currently before Parliament and Parliament is expected to resume deliberations on it after the Christmas break.
