Yesterday, the island of Comoros caused a major upset in the ongoing AFCON when they beat 4 time champions Ghana. Ghana needed a win against minnows Comoros to capture a slot in the last 16 of the tournament. Ghana lost to Morocco and drew with Gabon leaving the nation with no choice but a win against Comoros. But things took a dramatic turn when Ghana conceded less than 5 minutes into the game and Dede Ayew darkened the odds when he was red carded for his foul against Comoros keeper.
After the game journalists spoke to Dede Ayew about his views on the tournament and what is to be expected from the Black Stars in the near future. Most importantly a question was posed as to what Dede has to say to Ghanaians after this sudden exit from the tournament.
“We didn’t make them proud. We take responsibility for that. We didn’t have a good AFCON. All the goals conceded verses Morocco and Gabon were luck we need to learn from this. We need to take the criticisms and apologize to the nation for failing to qualify for the next stage. We are very disappointed because this is not Ghana. You guys know me and that I live to fight another day. We will be back.” Dede Ayew said.
Before the tournament, Dede had promised Ghanaians a fifth trophy even if it took their last blood. The Black Stars will have to put this tournament behind and move on. The Confederation of African Football will hold the draw for the last round of qualifiers for the World Cup next week. The team has to ready itself for that round. The exit sees the Black Stars failing to get a win for the first time in over 2 decades.
