Residents of Apiate in Bogoso in the Western Region suffered tragedy on Thursday, January 20, 2022, when a gas explosion killed dozens of people.
Following the news going viral, the Ghana Police Service started a preliminary inquiry into what caused the explosion, concluding that the explosion in Appiatse, Western Region, on Thursday was caused by a collision between a vehicle carrying mining explosives and a motorcycle.
The mining van, which was carrying significant amounts of explosives, was claimed to be traveling from Tarkwa to the Chirano mines when it collided with a motorcycle on the Bogoso road.
“Preliminary investigation has established that a mining explosive vehicle moving from Tarkwa to Chirano mines collided with a motorcycle resulting in the explosion,†part of their statement read.
The majority of the patients have been rescued and admitted to various hospitals and clinics within the Bogoso Municipality, according to a Facebook post by the Service.
It further stated that its personnel have seized command of the situation, providing security for emergency responders such as the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service to manage the crisis.
