Residents informed AFP that shots were fired near the president of Burkina Faso's private residence in the capital, Ouagadougou, late Sunday.
Soldiers at a number of barracks have revolted, demanding more funding for the war against Islamist terrorists.
A chopper that had its lights turned off flew over President Roch Marc Christian Kabore's neighborhood. At first, the shooting could be heard, which began out fairly loud and then became increasingly sporadic.
Many residents in the capital heard a lot of shooting in the military camps in Sangoule Lamizana and Baba Sy at the same time.
On Sunday, soldiers at various barracks across the country, including those in Sangoule Lamizan and Baba Sy, went on strike. They demanded that the army chiefs be removed and that the government be given "adequate resources" to combat Islamist militants.
According to AFP journalists, protestors backed the mutineers during the day and set up blockages in several sections of the capital. They were then apprehended by the cops.
Protesters were enraged by the government's handling of the Islamist threat, which they set fire to and stole.
The government imposed an overnight curfew across the poor landlocked country beginning at 8 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Monday and Tuesday, "until further notice." Schools across the country will be closed Monday and Tuesday, according to the education ministry.
The administration promptly dismissed rumors of a coup, and a list of demands from the dissident military did not include an attempt to remove Kabore. They also stated that the country requires a better jihadist-fighting strategy.
"We want enough resources for the fight against Islamist radicals," a soldier from the Sangoule Lamizana base said in a voice clip.
Disgruntled soldiers also want top generals "replaced," improved care for injured troops, and more assistance for the families of soldiers slain in action, according to a spokesman.
Twelve persons have been arrested in Burkina Faso in the previous week on suspicion of plotting to "destabilize" the country's institutions. After that, it takes a little more than a week for this to happen.
Protests were also prohibited, and police deployed tear gas to disperse them, arresting a large number of people.
