2020 Presidential candidate and Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has revealed the NDC hasn't soften it's stance on new taxes.
In a Facebook post, the former Head of State described the e-levy, 15% increase in government fees and charges and the benchmark values as burdensome taxes.
He said "the NDC remains opposed to the imposition of the numerous fresh taxes on Ghanaians at a time when government is living large and unwilling or unable to trim the expenditure, cut waste and check corruption".
Mr. Mahama insisted " these burdensome taxes will erode business capital, especially at a time when government has crowded on the private sector's access to credit by it's voracious appetite for borrowing".
It will be recalled that the NPP led government in the presentation of the 2022 budget statement introduced new taxes to sustain the development of the economy other than borrowing. Key among the taxes introduced were the 1.75% e-levy, 15% hikes in government charges and fees and many others.
The NDC side of Parliament opposed the introduction of the 1.75% e-levy and fought it in Parliament resulting in a brawl in the law-making chamber.
John Mahama joined the minority Members of Parliament for the closing session of the 2022 caucus retreat in Accra on Monday.
He believes the Ghanaian economy under President Akufo-Addo and his "economic messiah" Dr. Bawumia has collapsed owing to the debt crisis and mismanagement.
