Robert Lewandowski, according to Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, is the best footballer on the earth right now, with Karim Benzema and Lionel Messi rounding out his top three.
Despite scoring 69 goals in 59 games for Bayern Munich in 2021, Lewandowski was controversially overlooked for the Ballon d'Or award last year.
Instead, Lionel Messi, a Barcelona great and PSG superstar who scored 34 goals for his side, won the award for the seventh time, much to the chagrin of fans around the world.
And Haaland, Dortmund's 21-year-old prodigy who has 79 goals in 80 appearances, seemed to think Lewandowski should have won. In an interview with ESPN, the Norwegian striker was asked to pick his top three players in the world, and he beat Messi and Real Madrid center-back Karim Benzema to the top spot.
'That's a good question,' Haaland added. 'I believe it was the previous year, right?' I believe Lewandowski should be ranked first, followed by Benzema, who has also been excellent, but Messi is also outstanding.
'Benzema and Messi are now tied for second and third.'
Lewandowski was also a strong contender for the Ballon d'Or in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic forced the event organisers to postpone the ceremony. 'I'd want to acknowledge Robert Lewandowski, it's been a genuine honour to compete with you,' Messi remarked after receiving the 2021 award. 'Everyone knows you were the winner last year, and we all agree.' I believe France Football should award you the Ballon d'Or in 2020; you deserve it and it belongs to you.
