Deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, calls on Ghanaians to welcome the controversial 1.75 percent levy on electronic transactions.

Speaking in Koforidua at the government’s consultative and sensitization town hall meeting on the policy, the Deputy Majority Leader said the e-levy will improve the quality of lives of Ghanaians.

He said the ruling government has demonstrated to Ghanaians how it can utilize taxpayers' monies and so Ghanaians should be optimistic that the government will utilize the e-levy proceeds for the welfare of the citizenry.

“Even the onset of the pandemic and its challenges did not lead to the scrapping of our social intervention programmes. There are past governments that did not utilize revenue raised from taxes, but the NPP administration is not one of them. So this is a tax that must be passed to fix roads and create jobs. There will be enormous benefits. It has happened before, so all Ghanaians should support us,” he said.

He urged the citizenry to cooperate with the legislature to have the e-levy passed and avoid paying attention to negative criticisms from the opposition parties.

He further stated that the Akufo Addo-led government will be transparent to the citizenry when it comes to handling proceeds acquired from the e-levy.

In an interview with Johnie Hughes, Afenyo-Markin also stated on TV New Day that the e-levy will address issues of bad roads in the country.
