A newly admitted student at the University of Ghana - Legon, Nicholas, popularly known as Amaani, has drowned in the school's swimming pool on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

The fresh student drowned in the 21ft section of the pool.

In a viral video, he is seen being pulled out of the pool by his colleagues.

The fresh students, since they reported to school about three weeks ago, have not yet commenced their studies because of an ongoing strike embarked upon by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) since January 10.

UTAG has indefinitely withdrawn its services in all public universities across the country.

UTAG, among several other demands, wants the government to increase its annual research allowance.

Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has dragged UTAG to court after the latter failed to go back to the classroom against a directive from the NLC.

The case will be heard on February 3 at the Accra High Court.
