Mason Greenwood, a 20-year-old star player for Manchester United, has been suspended and arrested by police after his model girlfriend released bloodied images alleging he abused her.
After being accused of domestic violence, Greenwood was arrested on accusations of rape and assault.
The 20-year-old striker is still in jail, according to police, after the claims were made public through a series of violent Instagram posts.
Harriet Robson, Greenwood's girlfriend, posted images of her bloodied face, laps, and body on Sunday morning, January 30, accusing him of inflicting the injuries on her.
Her eyes were full with tears, and there appeared to be a black mark on the ceiling behind her in a photograph.
She also shared videos of a large cut on her mouth, as well as bruises on her legs and hip, on Instagram.
Greenwood and his girlfriend had been together since they were in high school.
Greenwood will not play or practice with the squad as the inquiry into the series of Instagram images proceeds, according to a statement released by the club on Sunday afternoon, January 30.
The Manchester United statement follows the girl's father's declaration that she was 'absolutely saddened' by the images because the Manchester United player 'has been part of our family for two or three years.'
'We first learned about this at 6 a.m. this morning,' he said. It's a nightmare. I'm still coming to terms with everything.
'As a father, you don't want to know that your daughter is going through something like that.' She has been questioned by the police and has given them a statement.
'She is utterly heartbroken by it all,' he continued.
On Sunday, two police officers were seen at the girl's home in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and took her statement.
Manchester United confirmed it was aware of the claims, while police stated they are investigating, and Greenwood's sponsor Nike expressed its 'great worry.'
Manchester United announced on Sunday afternoon:
'Until further notice, Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches.'
Greenwood joined Manchester United's academy when he was six years old and rose through the ranks.
At the age of 17 years and 353 days, he made his first start for Man United in 2019 and became the club's youngest ever goal scorer in a European competition against Astana.
Since then, the forward has made 129 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 22 goals.
Greenwood also played for England at the under-17 and under-21 levels before being promoted to the senior squad in August 2020.
