Ralf Rangnick has had a positive impact on Manchester United's defense since taking over as manager, but Harry Maguire believes the club still has a lot of work to do in the second half of the season.

Rangnick has now taken charge of ten United games, winning six, drawing three, and only losing one.

Although Rangnick's performances have not always been impressive, it looks that the German is getting his ideas across to his players, with encouraging wins over Brentford and West Ham in the Red Devils' previous two outings.

With only seven goals conceded in his ten games in charge, Maguire believes the veteran coach has improved the defense.

This is obviously a significant gain, but Maguire has reminded his boss that there's still a lot of work to be done.

'I think he's introduced a lot of different principles into the club,' Maguire said to United Review. 'But, without a doubt, we haven't conceded as many goals or as many chances.'

'It's a team effort; it's not just a back-four or goalkeeping effort.' It's a collaborative effort. The way they [the midfielders and forwards] work and cover areas in front of us makes our life a little simpler, but it's a massive effort from all of us.

'However, I believe there is still a lot of room for improvement, particularly with the ball currently.'

'We have to make sure we carry a little bit more of a threat with the ball and look after it a little bit better than we have in the past.'

The Red Devils return to action after the Christmas break on Friday night in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough, ahead of a Premier League trip to Burnley the following week, and Maguire has urged his teammates to improve their performances.

'I believe the results have been quite excellent since the manager came in,' the England defender continued.

'We've had some mixed results, but we've kept together and managed to get some positive things out of the period.' However, it has now set us up.

'We're in the middle of the season, and we need to make sure that the performances keep coming week after week.' I always say that, and I'm a firm believer in it, that excellent performances lead to good outcomes.

'So we have to make sure we put in those solid efforts, and the results will follow.'
