In the aftermath of Manchester United's FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough on Friday evening, Roy Keane agreed with interim manager Ralf Rangnick that wasteful Manchester United are the architects of their own demise.

Following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes at Old Trafford, United's FA Cup run came to an end when the visitors won an 8-7 penalty shootout, with Anthony Elanga missing the final spot-kick.

The two teams exchanged 15 successful penalties until Elanga was tasked with keeping the shootout going and helping United retain their hopes of reaching the fifth round alive.

However, he hit the crossbar with his effort, sending the 9,000-plus Middlesbrough fans into raptures behind the goal at the opposite end of the pitch.

United, who seized the lead in the first half thanks to a goal from Jadon Sancho, squandered numerous chances to put the game out of reach before halftime, including a failed penalty by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rangnick reflected on United's failure to convert its chances, saying, "We gave away too many chances, especially in the first half."

"We should have and could have easily been up 3-0 after 45 minutes, and we squandered some wonderful opportunities in the second half, even after they scored a goal that shouldn't have stood.

"However, Bruno's chance was almost as good as a penalty, so we must take responsibility for giving up and squandering too many chances throughout the game.

"And, in the end, if it's on penalties, it's also a question of luck, and we lost that game in the end, and we're all really disappointed."

United manager Jose Mourinho agreed with Keane, who was a member of the punditry team for ITV Sport's coverage of the match.

United's wastefulness in front of goal, according to the former midfielder, is a source of sadness.

"One of his [Rangnick's] concerns will be that they've only scored one goal in their previous several home games, and they've only scored one tonight," Keane told ITV Sport.

"I said Man United will find a way to win the game, but what they did was find a way to lose the game, and that's not a good sign."
