Students stranded at the Sunyani – Techiman Station due to increment in fares

There has been a heated back and forth amongst passengers and taxi drivers at the Chiraa Station in Sunyani, the capital of the Bono Region over what the passengers describe as ‘illegal’ increment in fares.

Passengers, who are mostly students, who have been stranded at the Chiraa Station are faced with a sudden increment in fares from Sunyani to Techiman.

In a brief interview with these frustrated students with Masemtvgh.com on Monday morning at 10:00 am, these students argue that they only know of the old fares of Gh₵17.00 for which reason, their parents did not factor the increment in the monies given to them for their transportation from Sunyani to Techiman.

”I don’t know that there is an increment in fare. The taxi i took from home to town did not charge me of any new fare – i paid the old one of Gh₵2.40” one student stated.

”Though, i have heard in the news of a possible 30 percent fare increment, i did not expect it to take effect from this morning because the taxi i boarded from Odumasi took the old fare of Gh₵2.60” another student added.

The plea of these dejected students, who were all students of Techiman Senior High School to the taxi drivers to consider them yielded no results as the drivers insisted on taking the new fare of Gh₵22.00.

Speaking to the ”book man” on this supposed fare increment, he indicated that he has tried to convince the taxi drivers to take the old fare of Gh₵17.00 in anticipation of an increment in fares but his attempt has not yielded any positive results.

”Since morning, i have tried to convince these taxi drivers to atleast take the Gh₵17.00 and wait for the outcome of the meeting with the Minister but they said no: either the passengers pay for the new fare of Gh₵22.00 or they the drivers will not work until the new fare of the 30 percent increment is announced” he stated.

The taxi drivers, who insisted of taking Gh₵22.00 as the new fare argue that whenever there is an increment in fuel products, the increment takes immediate effect and that they have all resolved to charge 30 percent in the old fare hence the Gh₵22.00 as the new fare.
