The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, said government is taking steps to convert all abandoned tollbooths across the country to public urinals where motorists can pee when the need arises.

“We even want to refurbish all tollbooth structures to provide proper and decent washrooms for the use by motorists so that we advised them to desist from that practice where sometimes you see cars stopping on the highway and people getting down to wee-wee as we usually see”, he said.

This is on the back of concerns raised by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) about the tendency of abandoned tollbooths to cause accidents on the roads.

The RSA wants the structures, which have been abandoned since November 2021, to be demolished.

The Roads Ministry ordered the closure of all tollbooths after the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta announced it in Parliament, while presenting the 2022 government's budget and economic policy.

Without giving the legislators latitude to deliberate on the proposal, the Road Ministry quickly directed that the collection of tolls be halted.

The abandoned structures will be soon converted to public urinals, according to the Minister.
