Barcelona and Real Madrid are expected to compete for Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry if the German international rejects a contract extension with the Bundesliga champions.
Gnabry, who joined Bayern Munich in 2017, is in the final 18 months of his current contract, and Sky Germany, via Fichajes, reports that while the 26-year-old wants to stay, the parties are still negotiating a salary.
According to Sky Deutschland, there is a growing belief that the former Arsenal winger will sign a contract, but the two parties are at odds over the salary.
Gnabry is said to view Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane as the bar to beat and does not want to earn less than the duo. For the record, the two players earn at least €15 million per season before bonuses.
Gnabry's figures are significantly lower, and the player, who has scored at least ten league goals in each of his four Bundesliga seasons with Bayern, believes he is deserving of a contract that reflects his performance.
As a result, there's no rush because, unlike Niklas Sule, who will leave Bayern at the end of the season, the 26-year-old is content in Munich.
His preference is to remain in the city because he believes Bayern can help him further develop, and his relationship with manager Julian Nagelsmann has never been better. More importantly, Nagelsmann is hesitant to let Gnabry go.
Apart from the salary, everything is in Bayern's favor, but if the unthinkable happens, it's worth noting that Real Madrid and Barcelona will be among the other top clubs looking to seize the opportunity.
Those sitting in potential suitors' offices are aware that the departure is highly unlikely, but they are still bracing themselves for a transfer battle.
