Mikel Arteta's rallying cry appears to have gone unnoticed, as Gabriel Martinelli was sent off on the same day the Spaniard addressed Arsenal's poor disciplinary record.
On Thursday, Mikel Arteta outlined his plans to combat Arsenal's appalling disciplinary record, saying that anyone who fails to adhere to good habits will be "exposed" in training.
But his rallying cry appears to have fallen on deaf ears, as Gabriel Martinelli was sent off on the same day, becoming the 12th Arsenal player to be sent off under Arteta.
Arsenal defeated Wolves 1-0 on Thursday night, with Gabriel Magalhaes scoring the game's only goal.
The Gunners were good value for their lead, but Martinelli was shown two yellow cards in the space of seconds and given his marching orders, nearly undoing all of their hard work.
Mikel Arteta outlined his plans for dealing with Arsenal's appalling disciplinary record.
After the game, many questioned Michael Oliver's decision to send Martinelli off for a second offense while advantage was being played.
But, by the rules of the game, Oliver was perfectly within his rights to red card Martinelli for his display of petulance.
Arteta discussed Arsenal's poor disciplinary record ahead of the game.
"We played three games out of five with 10 men, and if that's one of the things we continue to do in the last 17 games, our chances of being where we are going to be really low," Arteta told the club website.
"We must play with 11 players on the field." We need as many players as possible to be available and fit.
"We must maintain our unity." We must continue to improve our game model and proceed game by game."
When asked how Arsenal can avoid ill-discipline in the future, Arteta gave what appeared to be a loaded response aimed at specific players.
"I believe there are a few factors," he explained. "First and foremost, how we raise them throughout our academy, the types of characters that we develop, and that's the best way to do it in that pathway." Then, in recruitment, the type of characters and personalities you are signing and ensuring that they are the right ones to fit within your culture, and the other is living by example.
