Kofi Bentil, Senior Vise President of IMANI-Africa, claims that the NPP's majority in Parliament has not been strategic in its handling of key matters in the House.
He said that the party's present difficulties in raising the needed number of MPs to pursue the government's agenda might have been averted if its MPs had acted diplomatically during the appointment of the Deputy Speakers.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, Kofi Bentil said the NPP should not have allowed the Bekwai MP to take the Deputy Speakership because of the hung Parliament.
It's clear from everything we've seen that the NPP's parliamentary approach isn't working. It's shocking to me that some of these
"Because if the Speaker is absent and the Deputy Speaker takes his place, they will be one short." "They shouldn't have been doing that in a position where one vote makes a difference, strategy-wise," he told Newsfile Host Samson Anyenini.
He made these remarks in relation to the legal actions the NPP is pursuing against James Gyakye Quayson, an Assin North lawmaker, and Dorcas Afo Toffey, a Jomoro MP, over dual citizenship concerns.
The minority group has characterized recent events as government plans to utilize the courts to sway the balance of power in Parliament and diminish their numbers in order to enact the contentious E-levy.
Mr. Bentil reacted by saying that the NPP's first strategy failure is what he blames.
"Strategy can be more successful than the law in the practice of law." The NPP is taking advantage of any benefits that they may acquire from the court since they are having an issue in Parliament. "
This is a subject that comes before E-levy. It just so happens that pursuing this topic with a little more zeal would benefit them in Parliament, "he continued.
