The Club World Cup final among Chelsea and Palmeiras made it all the way to extra time, but the Blues were strong enough to lift the trophy for the very first time in their history thanks to a 117th-minute penalty by Kai Havertz.
Chelsea took the lead through Romelu Lukaku 10 minutes into the second half of regular time, but Palmeiras equalized nine minutes later thanks to a Raphael Veiga penalty following a Thiago Silva handball. It took till the 117th minute - the 27th minute of extra time - for another goal to be managed to score, as a handball by Luan resulted in Havertz's name being added to the scoresheet, just as he did in the last season's Champions League final.
Chelsea's game against with the Copa Libertadores winners was far from easy, as they managed to break loose Palmeiras' defense at times. The fact that only one of the three goals came during normal play, as Callum Hudson-excellent Odoi's cross was deafeningly headed well beyond Weverton by Lukaku, demonstrates this.
Raphael Veiga scored from the penalty spot for Palmeiras after Thiago Silva threw his arm up towards to the ball while jumping to make a header. It was a simple choice for the ref, and Veiga made amends in sending Edouard Mendy in the wrong direction to level the score.
Palmeiras looked to hold on for the remainder of normal time, and it was a similar method in extra time as well, till Luan was adjudged to have had his hand on the ball. Havertz was now the Blues' hero once more, taking responsibility and scoring from 12 yards out to ensure Chelsea's name is now on the Club World Cup trophy. Finally, Chelsea franchisee Roman Abramovich has won every trophy available.
