All too soon the unpredictable year of 2021 has come to an end and so have our favorite 2021 movies. Last year gave us some incredible and stunning cinema moments such as Eternals, A Quiet Place 2, James Bond No Time to die, Spiderman: No way Home, The Unforgiveable and many more. In this instance, though we will be talking about the people that make or break a movie’s box office success; the actors themselves. Even though there was a major slump in box office revenues all over the world due to the pandemic, many actors managed to make millions in their respective movies. Gone were the days the highest amount one could make for a movie was $20 million (enter Jim Carrey who become one of the first actors to achieve this back in 1996, for the movie “The Cable Guyâ€). Now streaming services have come to change the game, showcasing huge budgets and offering actors more money per film. Therefore, it is of no surprise that some actors were able to command more than $30 million per film last year. In this article, we will be discussing some of the highest-paid Hollywood actors of 2021. Let’s begin then, shall we?
Leonardo Dicaprio - $30million
Let’s just say Leonardo is never going to have a hard time finding roles for a long time to come. He is still one of the most sought-after actors even after almost 2 decades in the business and he doesn’t seem to want to slow down anytime soon. Most of his movies have become beloved classics still watched to this day. Last year he joined the insanely talented cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, and many more for hit Netflix sci-fi thriller “Don’t Look Upâ€. The movie follows Leo and Jennifer, two astronomers, who attempt to warn humanity about an approaching comet that will destroy the earth, however, the government and media don’t take it seriously until it’s is too late. Leonardo was unsurprisingly the highest-paid actor in the cast with a whopping $30 million dropped into his account.
Angelina Jolie - $35.5
There is a reason why Miss Jolie is the only woman on this list. Her acting portfolio speaks for itself with her movies still being talked about years later. In 2021 she intentionally didn’t involve herself in many movies but one of the few she did was Marvel’s Eternals. In the film, the Eternals are an immortal alien race who emerge from hiding after thousands of years to protect Earth from the Deviants, their alien counterparts. According to Forbes, for her role in this highly anticipated movie, she earned a massive $35.5 million cheque, making her the second-highest- paid actress in the world, only behind Sofia Vergara who continues to dominate the industry with her role in the recently ended “Modern Family".
Will Smith - $40 million
At this point, we all know Will Smith is one of the actors everyone runs to when they want to make sure their film is an Oscar contender. Therefore, it is of no surprise that his film “King Richard†is already getting Oscar buzz. The film follows the life of Richard Williams who helped train two of the greatest tennis players ever, his daughters Venus and Serena Williams. For his captivating performance in this movie, he pocketed $40 million, one of the highest salaries for an actor and the highest for a black actor in 2021.
Denzel Washington - $40 million
Everyone and everyone’s parents know Mr. Denzel Washington. This Hollywood veteran and icon has been acting in movies since I was in diapers and is considered one of the best actors of his generation. Therefore, are we really surprised to see his name here? I definitely think not. For his 2021 role as a corrupt detective alongside Jared Leto, the Oscar winner commanded a $40 million salary, making him and Will Smith the highest-paid black actors of 2021. Although the movie performed poorly at the box office, due to the release at the height of the pandemic, we know his demand for movies is not going to dwindle anytime soon.
Dwayne Johnson - $42 million
This man is the definition of using excellent branding to switch from one successful career to an even more successful one. The former WWE wrestler now box office hitmaker, starred in two insanely profitable films this year. He was cast as the lead for Disney’s Jungle Cruise, which tells the story of a small riverboat captain who takes a scientist and her brother through a jungle in search of the Tree of Life while competing against cursed conquistadors and a German expedition. For his role, he was rewarded with a mouthwatering sum of $22 million. Then just a few months later he starred in Netflix’s Red Notice, which went on break the record of the most- watched film on Netflix beating out previous holder Bird Box. In this movie, where he plays an FBI agent who has to reluctantly team up with an art thief to catch the world’s most notorious criminal, he again snagged a cool $20 million. Not a bad pay-check even during a pandemic era huh?
