Some major cities are sinking and Accra could be next!
Accra could be next on the list of sinking cities if care is not taken.
Some major cities around the world are actually sinking! Jakarta the capital of Indonesia is the fastest sinking city in the world. Sinking at a rate of 6.7 inches per year!
Other cities like Mumbai, Venice, Miami and others are also among the sinking cities, and Accra could be one of them if care is not taken.
What causes a city to sink is the ultimate question on everyone’s mind. There are actually a lot of factors that contribute to this phenomenon but the most common one is climate change (the rise in sea level)to be precise.
Almost all of these cities are coastal cities. The rise in sea level and the excessive use of ground water are the major causes. Most parts of Accra do not have access to pipe water especially the low income areas. Therefore the only obvious solution is to drill a borehole. In fact, most of the water selling companies use water pumped from underground. Selling water with a water tanker is also a very lucrative business. Supplying water to homes, offices etc. All these is due to the unavailability of pipe water and the population of the city is also on the rise; hence the increase in the demand for water. If we continue to pump water from underground, and with the rise of global sea level, it won’t be long till Accra join ‘the sinking cities club’.
Proper attention need to be paid to sea erosion . Rise in sea level means our coastlines are about to be devoured by the sea, so we must be ready with sea defense projects to avoid such catastrophe.

A COAST DEGRADED BY SEA EROSION
According to a UNESCO report by Prof. Kwasi Addo Appeaning of the university of Ghana, 37% of coastal land has been lost to flooding and erosion between 2005 and 2017. That is outrageous! And cultural heritage sites such as Fort Kongensten at Ada has been washed away!
FORT KONGENSTEIN BEFORE IT GOT WASHED AWAY
This is actually confirmed by the Ghana museums and monuments board
Many more such as the Osu Castle, Asomdwe Park, Independence square are all at risk of being swallowed by the sea. Thus increasing the chances of Accra of becoming one of the coastal cities being devoured by the sea, if the necessary corrections are not made. Thank you
