The University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Accra, says academics are set to commence on Monday, February 21, 2022, after the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) embarked on its six weeks strike.

A communique dated February 16 and signed by the Registrar, Dr. Koryoe Anim-Wright, notifies the University Community of the new development.

"Following the ruling by the High Court that lecturers should return to the lecture halls, the University Community is hereby informed that lectures will begin on Monday, February 21, 2022," the release says.

UTAG had declared a nationwide industrial strike in all public universities demanding better service conditions.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) described the strike action as illegal and directed UTAG to return to the classroom.

However, UTAG kicked against the directive.

The NLC secured an interlocutory injunction against the strike at the High Court to compel UTAG to return to the classroom.

The court, on two occasions, advised the two parties to resolve their differences outside court.

However, they could not arrive at a resolution.

The two parties met again on Thursday, February 15 for the court's final verdict.

The Accra High Court directed UTAG to return to the classroom while negotiations continue to take place.

The substantive matter which determines the legality or the illegality of the strike will be heard on February 22 in court.

It is on the back of the court's ruling that the UPSA has announced its reopening date.
