Emerson Palmieri, an Olympique Lyonnais defender, has explained why he did not return to Chelsea in January after his loan term was cut short.

After Ben Chilwell's injury, the 27-year-old was linked with a return to Stamford Bridge just six months after departing. He has now said that he made the decision not to terminate his loan period.

"I did not return to Chelsea because I promised Juninho that I would stay for a season," the Italy international stated of the failed move. I am a man who keeps his word. I enjoy being in Lyon and wish to remain here."

Palmieri continued:

‘’It's difficult to say for next season because it depends on the teams, but I'm pleased here."

Palmieri joined the Blues in January 2018 for a reported €29 million price from AS Roma. He, on the other hand, struggled for playing time, as Marcos Alonso was preferred in his place.

Chilwell's arrival in 2020 put him lower down the pecking order, forcing him to seek a loan switch in order to play regularly. However, due to the Englishman's long-term injury, the Blues were forced to look for a replacement left-back, and there was talk that Palmieri's loan would be cut short. That was not the case, as the former Santos midfielder is ready to finish his 12-month contract with the Ligue 1 club.
