Chelsea news: The club record signing for £97.5 million has been given some time to reflect on his most recent performance against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel had previously stated that the absence of Ben Chilwell and Reece James may have influenced his decision to rest Romelu Lukaku for the first leg of the Champions League tie in Lille.

Lukaku, 28, has come under fire from the media in recent days after it was revealed that he only made seven touches during the Crystal Palace victory.

"What can I do?" I'm not sure. "We have to deal with it now because the data is out there and speaks a different language," Tuchel said in a press conference on Monday afternoon.

"He wasn't involved in our game; strikers can be like this at times." It can be like this if they struggle a little with self-confidence, if they struggle a little with finding space and getting involved against a defensive side. Of course, this is not what we want, nor is it what Romelu wants, but it is also not the time to laugh at him or make jokes about him. Of course, he's in the spotlight, and we'll protect him."

The Mystery Scout was the first to reveal that the manager in question had benched the player who has sparked controversy among fans since the infamous Sky Italia interview, but why has he done so?

Along with giving someone like Timo Werner or Kai Havertz another chance to reclaim their spot in the first team fold on a consistent basis, the absence of key duo Reece James and Ben Chilwell may have indirectly influenced his decision.

"Maybe it's both. Of course, every style shifts when key players are sidelined for an extended period of time. We played the majority of the games with a back three and wing-backs, and two of our key wing-backs, Reece and Chilly, were injured at the peak of their abilities "When asked about the situation with both first-team regulars missing, the drop off in form since for Chelsea's number 9. he said

"They had a huge impact on our game offensively and defensively, especially Romelu, with their runs, speed, penetration, and deliveries." Of course, this varies, but we are not the only team where these players have a significant impact. Wing-backs are an important position in our system for influencing the game "We can still play and win games without any players because that is our job and what we want to do. When we have injuries or corona cases, this is what we try to do honestly. It is up to us and myself to adapt and find solutions. Romelu is always going to be a part of the solution."

Remember, Lukaku started like a house on fire in the first half, when both Chilwell and James were fit and firing in the first few months of the season, signalling that the money had been well spent.
