Sadio Mane became the first Premier League player in history to score more than ten goals in eight consecutive seasons with his brace in the 6-0 win over Leeds United.
Liverpool dominated from the start, leading 3-0 at halftime thanks to two Mohamed Salah penalties and a solo effort from Joel Matip.
Mane scored Liverpool's fourth and fifth goals of the game, bringing his Premier League tally to 11 this season, before Virgil van Dijk sealed the win.
This season, the Senegal international has largely gone unnoticed, but his performance against Leeds demonstrated that he is back to his brilliant best.
Mane joined Liverpool in 2016 and has scored in every season since, including his two years at Southampton.
Harry Kane is three goals shy of matching Mane's season total, but for the time being, he is the sole leader.
After a 6-0 home win over relegation-threatened Leeds United on Wednesday evening, the Reds are now only three points behind the leaders.
As Liverpool recorded their biggest-ever win over the Yorkshire club, Mohamed Salah scored two first-half penalties, Sadio Mane scored twice in the second half, and Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk both scored.
Klopp's side, which has won its last six Premier League games, trailed City by 12 points just two weeks ago but now has a better goal difference.
The Reds face Everton in the Carabao Cup final this weekend, with Pep Guardiola's side traveling to Goodison Park.
And, despite reviving the title race, Klopp has insisted that Liverpool is only concerned with its own results.
"We don't chase City," the Reds' manager stated. "We strive to win football games." The thing is, we now have the cup final at the weekend, and City will play I don't know who, but they will almost certainly win, and it will be six points again before we play the next Premier League game.
"I'm not sure if we play before or after them, so it could be nine points all of a sudden."
As a result, We just have to win our football games not to give numbers to them.”
