Conor Gallagher is expected to break into the Chelsea first squad next season, according to Rio Ferdinand. Ferdinand even went on to suggest that he feels the midfielder is destined to succeed Mason Mount.
Gallagher has been in excellent form for Crystal Palace on loan this season, scoring seven goals to lead the team in the Premier League. The loanee has improved his game to the point where he is expected to be the next big thing to leave Stamford Bridge.
He reportedly told Ferdinand early this season that he wanted to thrive at Chelsea and that he had no intention of staying at Palace. The Manchester United great predicted that the loanee will follow in Mount's footsteps, saying:
‘’It appears that he (Gallagher) has earned the right to return to Chelsea when he is a more experienced player to see where he is now. When Mount returned, the situation was the same. They were under no obligation to play him."
Ferdinand continued, " "Mason Mount returned to Chelsea unsure of his position in the pecking order or whether he would be given the opportunity. Conor Gallagher will accomplish that, and then Conor Gallagher will rapidly determine whether or not he will be given a chance. Then I believe the best option is to leave."The Manchester United great believes the midfielder should go all out in training to get into Thomas Tuchel's head.
In a recent FIVE video, the former defender praised the midfielder. He stated, " "This year at Palace, he's done a fantastic job. Goals, assists, he's had an impact on games, and he's got a lot of enthusiasm. He's in that situation where he's coming in from midfield and posing a goal threat. If I were Conor Gallagher, I'd be very optimistic about returning to Chelsea next season. I believe the management spoke highly of him."
What plans does Chelsea have for Conor Gallagher?
The Blues have yet to make a decision on Gallagher's future, and Tuchel has stated that now is not the time to talk about it. The German boss wants the midfielder to finish his loan at Palace and return to Stamford Bridge in the summer for pre-season training.
According to reports, Tuchel wanted to keep the midfielder in his first-team squad, but the loan deal from Palace was too tempting to pass up. Gallagher has made significant progress at Selhurst Park as a result of the move, which has benefited all parties.
