Najeeb Yakubu, a Ghanaian defender who plays in Ukraine, says the situation in the Eastern European country is deteriorating and has appealed to the Ghana government to help Ghanaians.
Following Russia's invasion on Ukraine on Thursday, the 21-year-old told 3Sports that everything has come to a halt, including football activities.
"Everyone is terrified, but what can we do?" says the narrator. "There isn't anything," Yakubu stated emphatically. "From here, you have no idea where to go because the airport is closed, nothing is open, there are no buses, no cabs, no banks, no restaurants... everything is closed." The military is the only ones in town, and they enable folks to buy [food] and return home."
Yakubu has been a top-flight player in Ukraine since joining Vorskla Poltava in 2018. Ukraine had been a peaceful country until Russian forces launched a major attack on Thursday morning, firing missiles at cities and military infrastructure.
"It's happening in my neighborhood." One city [under attack] is only one hour and thirty minutes away [from my location], so it is suddenly extremely close to me. Where do you proceed from here when the capital [Kyiv] is also under attack? Nowhere.”
"The club isn't functioning properly." Everyone has returned home. There is no preparation, no preparation... You can train in your room, but you won't be able to go out like we used to."
“[Ghana government] should come and help us let us go home because we want to be home. We are here for work but it seems [the situation] is getting worse every time,” he added.
