After Russia initiated military operations in Ukraine, former heavyweight champion boxer Vitali Klitschko told ITV that he is ready to fight for the country.
Ukrainians have gathered firearms and are "soldiers ready to protect their city," according to Klitschko, the mayor of the capital city of Kyiv.
When asked if he would join forces with the Ukrainians to fight the Russians, Klitschko stated it was a personal obligation.
"I'm sorry, but I don't have any other options." That is something I must do... "I'm going to fight," Klitschko stated.
Klitschko believes that his country's people can stave off the invasion in what he has already termed as a "bloody" conflict.
"I think so." Klitschko stated, "I believe in Ukraine, I believe in my nation, and I believe in my people."
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, made the decision to attack Ukraine, and the invasion began early Thursday morning. Wladimir, Vitali's brother and a retired Ukrainian boxer, had earlier in the day issued a lengthy statement criticising Putin's conduct from Kyiv.
Russia's actions, according to Wladimir, are a "blatant violation of international law" and a threat to democracy and the "European way of life." Putin, he claimed, was using military techniques to "rescue a fallen empire whose loss he has never acknowledged."
While opposing Putin's actions, Wladimir stated that he believes Ukrainians would remain strong in the face of the tension and Putin's efforts, and that they will protect themselves before other countries become involved.
"Let us not be paralyzed by fear; let us not be paralyzed by inaction," Wladimir remarked. "Putin fires at Ukrainian cities, but he is more concerned with our hearts and minds. He wants to sow doubt and confusion, which will lead to inaction.
